Bury Transport Museum

One of the star attractions on the ELR, don’t miss the amazing Bury Transport Museum, packed with historic vehicles of every shape and size.

Hop off the train at our Bury Station, and just across the road – in the restored Castlecroft Goods Warehouse from 1848 – you’ll find the Bury Transport Museum. It’s a must-see stop for all visitors to the East Lancashire Railway, old and young.

Inside, we’ll take you back through the 20th Century, recreating what life was like with loads of hands-on exhibits and full-size vehicles.

Why Visit?

The whole family will be amazed at the stories we share and the cars, trucks, buses and trains we have on display. You’ll find a treasure trove of vintage vehicles to discover and period costumes to try on, alongside loads of hands-on activities to get stuck into.

We’ve got dozens of original artifacts from the turn of the 20th century and beyond, each telling its own unique tale about the people living and working in the industrial North West – and how they travelled about.

Discover the horse drawn tram that was once a chip shop, learn how “Hilda” the steam roller almost met her end and more.

Special Workshops and Exhibitions

We’re always changing our exhibitions and bringing in new experiences, so watch this space to see what’s new at the Bury Transport Museum. During the school holidays, we host drop-in craft workshops and special events, and we can also organise special visits for school groups.

Admission Prices

Tickets to the Bury Transport Museum can only be purchased online or on the day and are valid for entry in a 12-month period, providing the Gift Aid option is selected.

Entry is FREE for visitors with an East Lancashire Railway Day Rover ticket.

Please note access may be limited during special events, and event tickets might be required for entry.  

Opening Hours

Bury Transport Museum is open 10am – 4pm whenever public services (excluding Dining services) are running at the East Lancashire Railway. You can find running days here.

Where to find us

We’re in the Castlecroft Goods Warehouse, just across the road from the Bury Bolton Street Station. You won’t miss us, there are plenty of signposts from the platform.

If you’re coming by car our address is Castlecroft Goods Warehouse, Bolton St, Bury BL9 0EY. Parking is limited.
